إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

ин həəз̃əə ильлəə хулюќуль-əувəлиин

These are nothing but the traditions of the ancients,

وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

вəмəə нəhну биму'əз̃з̃əбиин

and we will not be punished.’

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ  ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً  ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

фəкəз̃з̃əбууhу фə`əhлəкнəəhум, иннə фии з̃əəликə лə`əəйəh, вəмəə кəəнə əкc̃əруhум-му`миниин

So they impugned him, whereupon We destroyed them. There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

вə`иннə рōббəкə лəhувəль-'əзиизур-рōhиим

Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

кəз̃з̃əбəт c̃əмуудуль-мурсəлиин

[The people of] Thamud impugned the apostles

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

из̃ ќōōлə лəhум əхууhум сōōлиhун əлəə тəттəќуун

when Salih, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

иннии лəкум рōсуулюн əмиин

Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.

فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

фəəттəќуул-лаhə вə`əтыы'уун

So be wary of Allah and obey me.

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ  ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

вəмəə əс`əлюкум 'əлэйhи мин əджр, ин əджрийə ильлəə 'əлəə рōббиль-'əəлəмиин

I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.

أَتُتْرَكُونَ فِى مَا هَٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ

əтутрōкуунə фии мəə həəhунəə əəминиин

Will you be left secure in that which is here

فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

фии джəннəəтиу-вə'уйуун

—amid gardens and springs,

وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ

вəзуруу'иу-вəнəхлин тōль'уhəə həдыым

farms and date palms with dainty spathes

وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَٰرِهِينَ

вəтəнhитуунə минəль-джибəəли буйуутəн фəəриhиин

—while you skillfully hew out houses from the mountains?

فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

фəəттəќуул-лаhə вə`əтыы'уун

So be wary of Allah and obey me,

وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓاْ أَمْرَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

вəлəə тутыы'уу əмрōль-мусрифиин

and do not obey the dictates of the transgressors,

ٱلَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ

əльлəз̃иинə йуфсидуунə фииль-əрды вəлəə йуслиhуун

who cause corruption in the land and do not bring about reform.’

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ

ќōōлюю иннəмəə əŋŋтə минəль-мусəhhəриин

They said, ‘Indeed you are one of the bewitched.

مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

мəə əŋŋтə ильлəə бəшəрумм-миc̃люнəə фə`ти би`əəйəтин иŋŋ-куŋŋтə минəс-сōōдиќиин

You are just a human being like us. So bring us a sign, should you be truthful.’

قَالَ هَٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

ќōōлə həəз̃иhи нəəќōтуль-лəhəə ширбуу-вəлəкум ширбу йəумимм-мə'лююм

He said, ‘This is a she-camel; she shall drink and you shall drink on known days.

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

вəлəə тəмəссууhəə бисуу`ин фəйə`хуз̃əкум 'əз̃əəбу йəумин 'əз̃ыым

Do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by the punishment of a terrible day.’

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُواْ نَٰدِمِينَ

фə'əќōрууhəə фə`əсбəhуу нəəдимиин

But they hamstrung her, whereupon they became regretful.

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ  ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً  ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

фə`əхōз̃əhумуль-'əз̃əəб, иннə фии з̃əəликə лə`əəйəh, вəмəə кəəнə əкc̃əруhум-му`миниин

So the punishment seized them. There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

вə`иннə рōббəкə лəhувəль-'əзиизур-рōhиим

Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
